Slew Bearing Race Wear Measurements

To monitor the life of a large diameter slewing bearing such as the heavily loaded reclaimer slewing bearing several factors must be taken into account. The measurements must be repeatable and therefore must be taken at the same location on the upper and lower race of the bearing. It is imperative that this location be indelibly marked preferably punched into the mating flanges above and below the bearing. The measurements must be duplicateable and therefore should be simple and easy to obtain. It is recommended that they be as direct as possible using the machined surface of the support flange and the lower surface of the upper bearing body. This is a measurement of the raceway clearance and can be taken with feeler gages and key stock that can be easily duplicated. When plotted onto a Predictability Chart the results can be somewhat “flat lined” for the first 6 to 10 years of bearing life.
