On chain and rake conveyors that are hydraulically tensioned there are two hydraulic cylinders that supply the power to tension the chain. As the chain wears these cylinders extend with the elongation of the chain. Most cylinders have an 18” to 24” rod extension so that when the cylinders have extended enough the chain needs to be shortened by removing links. Monitoring the number of times that the chain is shortened is critical to determining the wear of the chain. The number of times and number of links removed will add up to a value that determines the allowable amount of wear in the chain pins. When the wear value reaches the acceleration envelope, typically after three 3’ sections of chain removed, then the chain and rake conveyor needs to be replaced. When these values are communicated with BRUKS Rockwood they can assist the maintenance department with the life remaining and the procurement of a replacement chain and rake conveyor.
