Stacker/Reclaimers with 5 or more years of service can experience difficulties with the safety switches such as, corrosion of interior parts, insulating coatings of foreign materials, and etc. Occasionally switches in the PLC ladder logic will be “forced” to alleviate a locked-up situation and the force remains due to workload. A safety audit should be performed to assure that these switches are operational as originally intended. All slewing and luffing overtravel proximity switches, stacker/reclaimer boom collision switches, e-stop switches, pull cord switches and any tertiary switches that have a safe operation purpose should be tested from the switch through the PLC. This will prove the function of the switch, the wiring, and the I/O in the motor control center. Replace any defective components in the circuit and monitor any forces that render the switch inoperable. Return these circuits to their original design intent to maintain the safe reliable operation of the Stacker/Reclaimer as well as the surrounding material handling equipment.
