Wood processing for pellets production in Spain

Even, Continuous Feeding

60,000 tons/yr.: Operations at the pellets mill in Tarazona de la Mancha, Spain were taken up last August

The wood processing plant for a pellets mill in Tarazona de la Mancha producing 60,000 tons a year has been realized by BRUKS Klöckner, Hirtscheid/Germany, in cooperation with BRUKS Klöckner’s Spanish representative Prodesa, Zaragoza.

Last August, BRUKS Klöckner has started up its turn-key wood processing plant for pellets production in the recently developed industrial zone of Tarazona de la Mancha, together with its local representative Prodesa.

Spain has the know-how and competence for building complete, turn-key pellets factories.

20 tons of logs per hour

The pellets mill requires processing of 20 tons roundwood per hour. The roundwood is debarked in a high-capacity debarker featuring three cam-fitted rotors that rotate the roundwood while cracking its bark. “The rotating and rubbing motion of the wood enables efficient debarking also of crooked logs,” says Markus Schwarz, BRUKS Klöckner’s regional sales manager.

The debarker is constantly being fed via a cross-conveyor; the hydraulic debarker controls are deviced so that they ensure continuous log processing. “This in turn ensures continuous feeding of the drum chipper,” says Markus Schwarz. A metal detector protects the plant.

A cross-feeder steadily feeds the debarker.

Material infeed decisive for quality
The drum chipper is a DH 400 x 800 with an infeed 400 mm high and 800 mm wide. This chipper is able to convert at least 20 tons/hr. of logs into top-quality chips. Innovative technology and optimum infeed properties guarantee the highest possible chip quality, according to the manufacturer in Hirtscheid. A metering conveyor can add shorter wood pieces such as trim ends to the logs.

The chipper also features quickly replaceable wear parts and an anvil that’s hydraulically run in and out. All this ensures extremely high availability of the BRUKS-Klöckner chipper.

The chips are discharged into a scraper conveyor, which in turn discharges them onto a live floor. From there they fall into a vibratory conveyor metering them into a hammer mill. The hammer mill processes the chips into homogenous, short-fiber chips that are perfectly suited for drying.

Fast access to all machine parts
“Thanks to the smart opening mechanism, all machine parts are readily accessible,“ says Markus Schwarz. “Also the hammer mill has easily exchangeable wear parts. You just need to hydraulically open both sides of the mill”.

The machine can rotate clockwise or counter-clockwise, which eliminates the need for the turning of beaters, screens and milling segments. This keeps maintenance requirements low, just like in the rest of the plant, according to Prodesa.

After the hammer mill, the chips are dried in a dryer and then pressed into pellets in two processing lines with a total capacity of 60,000 tons a year.

The hammer mill infeed is combined with a special cleaner system eliminating metal and mineral contamination.

A BRUKS Klöckner drum chipper DH400x800 processes logs into chips at a rate of 20 tons/hr.
